About Roding Valley Roofworks

What this site is

Roding Valley Roofworks is a small editorial project about flat roofing in and around Ongar. We write about the roofs themselves — the materials, the details that matter, and the patterns we see repeated across local housing.

It grew out of years of looking at flat roofs in this corner of Essex and wanting somewhere to set down what's worth knowing.

What we cover

The guides are tied to real places and real building types. A few examples:

  • Rubber roofing on North Weald Bassett bungalows and outbuildings
  • Why Harlow's new-town housing carries so many flat roofs
  • Re-roofing flat sections on Shenfield's inter-war homes
  • Buckhurst Hill's Victorian and Edwardian stock
  • Brentwood extensions and the flat roofs that cover them

How it's written

Each article starts from what's actually on the ground in a given town, not from a generic template. We try to be straight about how flat roofs behave, where the weak points are, and what renewal usually involves.

No jargon for its own sake, and no pretending every roof is the same. The detail of a Loughton bay differs from a Chigwell garage, and the writing reflects that.

Who it's for and getting in touch

It's for homeowners weighing up a repair or replacement, and anyone curious about why their roof looks the way it does. If something here helps you ask better questions, it's done its job.
